The 31-year has been without a club since leaving Genoa in the summer, and has suffered a series of major knee injuries throughout his career.Rossi posted a message on his Twitter account to confirm his return to United was not in in any way related to coaching, while also uploading a picture of Old Trafford under the floodlights on Saturday.Under Sir Alex Ferguson, Rossi made 14 appearances in all competitions and scored four times before making a permanent switch from United to Villarreal in 2007.Despite being named United’s Young Player of the Year in 2005 and Reserve Team Player of the Year the following season, Rossi never managed to truly establish himself in the first-team and endured several loan spells away from the club. At the start of the 2006/07 season, the American-born striker was loaned to Newcastle, where he played 13 times and netted once in a League Cup tie against Portsmouth and was then sent to Parma. He has also represented Fiorentina, Levante and Celta throughout his career, and made 30 appearances for the Italian national team between 2008 and 2014.
